Default New member - 1984 5000s

Hi group,

I've always had a love for European cars, and I bought my first (sort of, read on) Audi yesterday. It's a one owner 1984 5000s 5 speed with 130K miles. I plan on using it to commute my 35 daily miles each way to work.

The Audi is the most common car I've ever owned. I have a thing for Peugeots, and have a mint 89 405Mi16 that I do not want to risk commuting in. The Audi is replacing my very very tired Peugeot 505 SD that I now have to retire. My non-Euro cars are a 1965 Chevrolet C10 pickup (for dirtbikes) and a '76 Pontiac Lemans that my grandpa bought new and only has 20k miles. I can't bring myself to sell this one.

I am also in the process of restoring a 1965 NSU Wankel Spider. Parts for this are hard to get, but I've found that I can interchange some Audi and Porsche parts, and I plan to have it running in a couple months if I can ever scare up some good apex seals.

My new 5000 is mechanically very very good, but of course there are some electrical gremlins. I plan to attack one at a time, and I will be seeking advice in the classic section of these boards. I've been lurking a bit here and it seems there are some very smart and helpful people that read these. I'm going to worry about the climate control, clock, trip meter, and gas gauge first.

I'm afraid my first Audi experience wasn't that great though. I paid my money and shook hands with the owner, and went on my way. 5 miles later, I was stopped by the side of the freeway with a dead motor. I remembered he said he had been messing with the vacuum hoses and ignition wires before he got it smogged, so in the pitch black darkness, I pushed on the distributor cap and twisted some of the wires. The car fired right back up, and I hope the cap was just loose.
