Default New owner with problem

So I have a 99 a4 quattro with the 1.8 turbo engine with an automatic. I got the car from my step father who had an engine(which I believe was from another wrecked audi) put in this one. The engine runs fine and dandy.

Now comes the problem, apparently the guys who replaced the engine used the computer from the new engine also which had a manual transmission (Great). My step dad drove the car for a while before purchasing an SUV, the car is still drivable, but I would prefer to not jeopardize the transmission as much as possible. Could you guys provide any links to a thread on how to flash the ECM/ECU/Computer/what ever the right term is for an audi?

As a side note, I have done some computer work with my motorcycle, so I some experience in computers, and would like to do this myself if it is in the realm of possible.

Willkommen to the forums!

The ECU controls the engine functions, the TCM controls the transmission. this is why your car works even thought the ECU thinks it is a manual. You can recode the car with a vag-com so that the ECU realizes that it is linked to an automatic transmission.

be sure to spend some time in the A4 section. lots of good information and great people there that can help you when you have issues.

good luck

Thank you for the welcome and advice 02A6Beau. If I can get these things sorted out I will definitely be sticking around. $250 is a lot, are there any other options?

post up in the regional section of the forums. you might be able to find someone close by you that will let your "borrow" theirs. If you plan on keeping the car for any length of time and are going to be doing your own repairs and maintenance it is pretty much an essential tool to have
