turbo cuts out when it hits 3000 revs
I am a newbie to Audi, and the car I purchase for my wife is an A41997 1.8T Q. Im also a newbie to turbo too and the car has been modified as the seller has mention it was his project car. Has got a 33mm external waste gate on it. Been driving the car over 9month and have had no problems, but now when I try to boost, it cuts out when I hit 3000revs. It cut out like it does when it red line. Apparently I have been told if the turbo has blown it would smoke up, and it is not smoking up. We still drive it around but just drive it normally (not pedal to the metal) Is it a turbo leak or something else. Am in need of some advice.

Willkommen to the forums!
you should probably post your question in the A4 B5 section of the forums. not too much technical help here in the "New Member Welcome Area". it is always risky buying someone else's "project" car. there could be a bunch of things going on with your car. i would recommend that you have it scanned and see if it is throwing any codes. with the types of modifications the PO was working on, i suspect the ECU would need to be reprogrammed. if this has not been done, the car's "brain" isn't going to understand what is happening as the car is being driven and is going to go all wonky trying to compensate. I suspect the issue is with the wastegate. it sounds like it is dumping your boost prematurely. I'm not sure why it took nine months to become an issue, but it seems like a reasonable place to start
good luck
