I want 400 + HP. Looking for ideas
 

Im pretty new to the audi world.. I have a 98 a4 1.8 turbo, Quattro, automatic, with about 143k on it. Ive worked on Hondas for the pat 5yrs or so... and looked for a change in with this a4.

Ive done basic work already. Brakes, oil, etc..
Im looking to keep a consistant 300+ on this baby.
I wanted some ideas on which way i should go to achive such horse power.
Not that I want to spend this much but lets keep the budget under... 5k with respect that i will be doing some of the work myself.

Ideas, models of stuff, info...

some one will correct me if im wrong here im sure, but i think the elims are the best way to go with an automatic... Im not sure exactly how much power they can handle, but i know its not too much. If i remember correctly, you dont want to go much higher than 300awhp... look at the "eliminator kits" on atpturbo.com

400 hp with an auto?? I think not.

Your looking at a complete engine rebuild with probably a GT35 or larger turbo, huge fuel pump, manual trans conversion, rods, pistons, and a good set of cams. Budget at least 8K.

For the auto tranny, 300-350hp max is what I have heard ,although torque and rate of change are important factors, not just pure hp. An eliminator setup would be your best bet. You can read about them on the BT (big turbo) thread in the b5 forum. I believe that tooxtreme8813 is running the elims on his automatic, so he may be a good resource.

Also not 100% sure on this one, but isnt a manual conversion next to impossible on these cars?

Ok are you looking for 400hp at he crank or at the wheels?


For 400 at the crank you can do a GT2871r or elim kit kit, those will get you 400chp on race and 350chp on pump.


For more power then that you will need to go with a t3/t04 50 trim or a GT30.

I have a customer that is running a 2 liter GT35r setup on his Tiptronic A4.


We are also going to be doing a new twin scroll setup hopefully next month or early next year.

the eliminator set up looks like a good idea. However, my concerns then fall in line with the tranny. With 143k, do u think my transmission will do ok?
And with stock internals, how much should I look to boost? And for how long before I start having engine problems? Assuming there is none right now.
300 on the street would be plenty fine. I'm really looking for consistantsy, and reliability.

Well the tq spike on a elim isn't nearly as bad as a K03/K04 and plenty of people are running those on tip/autos.

Tq kills automatics not hp.

Less than a $1000 on the turbo w/ internal w/g.... which one should I go with?

and if I wanted to beef up my tranny a little. should I just take it to a transmission shop.. or is there an upgrade that I can consider(which would probably be cheaper). Remember... auto/tip

If you want to spend less then $1000 for a turbo it will have to be a T series journal bearing turbo. A GT28rs or GT2871r will cost you just over $1000-$1150.
