Turbo sounds - Looking to buy 2001 Audi TT

Hi folks, newbie here so pardon the repeat questions. I found some threads related to this but need some help in layman's terms.

I'm looking at a beautiful 2001 TT Quattro, and took it for a spin. However the turbo doesn't whistle (should it?). Instead it makes a whoosh sound like a rush of air is being released.

Is this normal or is something wrong? Thanks for any help you can offer.

It shouldn't really whistle and is the whoosh sound you here when your on the throttle or when your lifting off?

The turbo in a stock car will whistle but faintly you really have to listen for it unless the install is aftermarket (cone filter)

However the whoosh sound you are hearing (if its from lifting off the pedal or when shifting) should be the diverter valve/blow of valve which is releasing the unused boost from the turbo. THAT is normal, and what many people actually mod their cars for

Thanks guys. The previous owner installed a boost controller and it looks like the setting was way off. It was demanding a boost at about 1000 RPMs, which resulted in a loud rush of air. The mechanic dialed it back and it runs really nice. Should I just remove this setup? I have no intentions of racing or using it at all.

If you are bored and want to do it, sure. There is no disadvantage of having it there regardless of racing or not
