Turbo Upgrades...

Hi All!

My name is Matt, kind of new to the forums. I own a 2001 A6 2.7T, will have it paid off by the spring/summer, latest in the fall. I'm gonna buy a 2007/2008 A6 afterwards.

Anyways the car I have now is going to be my play car. I wanna give it a bit more horsepower (lets be honest, 2.7T's have a beast of an engine already. I was very surprised at how fast this thing was, and to this day it still surprises me). So I wanna upgrade the turbo's in it. I know this could cost tones of $$$ but this is something I'm looking at doing AFTER I get my 2007/2008.

I need some advice: where do I start? I would like to JUST swap out the turbos without having to swap anything else out - are there any turbos out there that are built specifically to upgrade cars like this? Any kits or anything?

Thanks!
Matt

You can do that but you'll gain effectively nothing. The whole point of upgrading turbos is to flow more air for more power. You need to read up on turbo theory to get familiar with what you're doing on this - more air = lean conditions, and blown engines, unless fueling is upgraded to keep the air:fuel mixture on the slightly rich side of stoichiometric. Increasing airflow pressure means increased heat in the charge, so upgrades to the intercoolers are needed. Clutch or torque converter can only take so much before they're toast. And of course controlling an engine setup that's been altered in this way means a new ECU tune to control it.
