Default what makes the turbo quite?

i drove a friends A4 tonight and i decided to get on it alittle. you could HARDLY hear the turbo. she talks about wanting it louder all the time so i figured since her bday is comming up maybe ill try to do something. is there anything i could do that cost less then 250? This also sparks my interest on what makes a stock turbo car more quite then persay my old turbo'd civic where you can hear it?

to to make it clear, im not looking for something obnoxious. just to hear the spool would be nice.

The stock air box completely muffles the sound. You want more spool sound, you need to dump the box for an open element filter. But to take into account, it is a really small turbo and the spool isnt all to loud.

Thats strange, I had the same 1.8t engine when I had my jetta, and I could hear the turbo really well, with the stock airbox even.
