Default artistic movie directors

Any ideas for an artistic movie director I can write 4-5 pages on? The more quirky and out of the box the better. The only one I got so far is Tarantino. Thanks.

Edit-maybe I should elaborate. Its gotta be someone whos works are very "visually stimulating".

Stanley Kubrick should give you plenty to write on. His life was about as screwed up as his movies...

Others:
David Lynch - Mulholland Drive.
Oliver Stone - Platoon, etc.
Alfred Hitchcock - You should know a few of these.
Michael Mann - Heat, Last of the Mohicans, Ali

Should get you going...

He did say "artistic director", but I guess that every director is fairly artistic in one way or another.

I also like some of the stuff that John McTiernan has done - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McTiernan

Not all of his stuff is gold, but I like the way he films things.

Also - Steven Soderbergh - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Soderbergh

haha engineering major. Its for my stupid Comp/Lit class. I need someone interesting since I don't have any motivation to write this damn paper. The only reason Tarantino came to mind is because I liked pulp fiction and reservoir dogs lol

also, you should really look into burton, that guy is a nut. He like things real dark and stuff and also the corpse's bride and nightmare before christmas couldnt of been cooked up from a normal mind.

Yeah, I thought he meant a director that makes films that are more artsey and not the Jerry Bruckheimer type of $hit.
