Default Audi and VW?

Hey guys, Im just wondering, since Audi and WV are associated, what makes an Audi an Audi and a VW and VW? Reason I ask is because I like Audi, but when I saw they were with VW, I was a little confused. I really dont like VW for some reason....

Build quality. Yeah, they're owned by the same group and many parts are interchangeable, but there is a definite difference in build quality. I'm not bashing VW, though. The thing is, they suffer from a lot of the same flaws as Audis and then some. I get why their owners like them, but I'm pretty sure I won't ever own one.

As for an example of what I'm referring to with the build quality...get in my 11 year old B5 and you won't hear a single creak or rattle. My roommate's 2008 GTI on the other hand makes all kinds of annoying noises and the plastic just feel cheaper...great car, but it's less good in some key ways. And it doesn't even come close to comparing to the S4 which looks and feels quality in every way. There's nothing like it. Audi's reputation is well-deserved.

VWs are built to be economical "peoples car". In other words their design and manufacture is cut-corner cheap. Yea vw and audi share many parts but audi clearly has better build quality. I'd never own a vw, well maybe the new scirocco, maybe. Plus quattro>haldex>fwd

OT: is it just me or does the golf/gti platform keep getting fuglier. Every redesign looks more and more like an egg on wheels. Don't get me wrong they are great cars, fast too. But everything about the mk6 says female highschool grad.

The build quality issues with VW are largely isolated with the Jetta/Rabbit/GTI because those suckers are built in Mexico/Brazil.
If you're ever in a B5 Passat, the quality is very similar to a B5 A4. I think the A4 looks better inside and out... but they are very similar. In terms of mechanical parts, they are identical cars. If I didn't have the extra $ for an A4, I'd definitely be in a Passat.

Mainly IMO it comes down to the body construction. They share drive trains but that's where it ends. A B5 A4 vs a B5 Passat will be the same engines transmissions and likely suspension but the Passat feel's cheaper and looks cheaper inside. The door's aren't quite as solid as the A4 either. What I love is how the A4 door is so solid yet not heavy.
