Default Best track car?

I am looking to buy an old car like a porsche 928 or a bmw 3 series to modify for the track only. Probably for use at lime rock or a road track similar to this.I am thinking about spending around 10g or hopefullyless for the intitial car. What do you think is the best car in this range to make my track car?

A Porsche 928 would be cool but I would also look into a 944 Turbo. They are quick out of the box and have great potential to make even better.

i think you have the right idea with the 3 series.....you can find E30's for cheeeep and there are tons of parts for them.
I would also consider a mk2 golf, they seem to have a good following and can be very fun.

kinda depends on what you're looking for...if you want an expensive track car, get a german car like a porsche or vw...if you want something cheap and fast, get a japanese car like a 240sx or a miata

and yes, i did just say miata.

maita's are handling masters out of the box, great for auto-x/road courses. add some stiff suspension, drop some weight and add some power and you've got one hell of a contender

no doubt, ive seen some miatas took out impulses, tiburons, mr2s,imprezas, they are really light, small, and rwd too. As simple as tightening up your suspension a bit, sway bars are great too.

Good fairly cheap track cars:

1 Porsche 924 or 944 (turbo or not)
2 Mazda Miata
3 Mazda RX7 (turbo or not)
4 Older BMW 3 series
5 Nissan 240SX
6 Older VW Golf/GTI

Are you looking for a "Race car" or just a dedicated track car? $10g's will be nothing on the 928, & it's a big heavy, not the best track car.

If you want to race, go to the local track & see what they race, find a class that is both cheap & fun. Chances are if you go the 928 rout you will be the only one out there, and then they will class you with Corvettes & big V8's you will not have fun.

IMHO, the BEST bang for the buck on Euro cars is the early E30 BMW, 1984-1991. There super solid, cheap to purchase & maintain, a lot of fun on the track. $10k will get you the car, spare tires, & race prepped. The 91 318 is the lightest & very nimble, the "is" will have a LSD. the 325 from any year is great, the m20 is super cheap, and makes ok power. A stripped E30 track prepped is under 2500lbs, if you put it on a good diet it will be under 2100lbs.

Then if you want even more budget, get a Honda, yea, I said it. There super cheap, light, and lots of support no matte where you go.
