Default canned meats and expiry dates

ok so i have a can of sausages. the "expiry date" shows that it "expired" a few months ago. i didn't think canned things went bad. what gives? is it still ok?

discuss.

I know for a fact they do expire. Even canned corns and such.

If it was sausage tho, I'd still eat it. Aren't sausages supposed to be better the longer it sits?

I feel like expiration dates can be negated by thorough cooking, but maybe thats just me lol

Its kinda true that canned food does expire. The lawyers and teh USDA make manufacturers put exp date, to limit their liability. If you eated it AFTER that date, and got sick, its YOUR fault, not the manufacturers. I've eten foods up to a year past their exp dates (of course, I dint check until after I started cookin it, then said, basically, WTF, and ate it anyway) and I'm still kickin.

Open teh can and smell it. Food that's gone bad SMELLS bad, 99% of the time. If you have doubts, throw it out.

^ x2. And if the can is deformed outward in any way, say, the lid is dented upward; then that's a sign of botulism. Give it to that neighbor you hate immediately.

25 years ago I ate some 10-year-old C-Rats... Others got sick (weaklings, ALL), but it dint bother ME none.

If you have 2 cans, give one to someone you might not like so much... If they live, its good to eat!
