kriptonic, don't you notice the ancient turbo trucks, volvos and mercedes from the 70's and 80's on the roads? i think a forced induction engine generally has stronger internal components. a loss of boost through a leak is a relatively minor issue that can be noticed by a novice, everyday driver. the 1.8T also doesn't have direct injection. it's fuel injected so it's an old proven technology. turbos have been around for decades. it's the new technologies that has me concerned. plus, my friend has an old 1.8T and it's rock solid with no problems, fwiw.

Overall the 2.8 has been known for its rock solid reliability since it was introduced. Citing the number of old as hell turbo vehicles on the road is good, but how much wrench time does each driver put into their vehicle? Also, while your friend's old 1.8T might be running strong, there are exceptions to every rule. As far as I've seen the 2.8 is the SB Chevy of the Audi world when it comes to reliability. I'm not saying anyone is wrong and stupid but I've got a 2.8 and if it can handle me, it's reliable. Just ask anyone from the NE crew that's met me and they'll tell you that I beat on my car.

agreed. but that's why we all chip in our 2 cents to form some consensus.

a turbo engine is more complex than a naturally aspirated engine so that could leave some to believe that there just more chance of something going wrong. all the 18 wheelers have turbos and those engines run alot of miles before they are stripped or re-built.

Get a B6 S4. All the consensus you need.

there is a 2000 1.8t here in st louis for $1000..... that would give you 4 grand to do maintenance....

but if you want a more reliable car, get a 2.8

if you want a "strong" motored a4... get the aeb motor

I bought a one owner 18T, woman driven, every record since day 1.

Total ive put about 4k into it, between professional repairs, maitnence, and DIY, and its still not right.

I have lost almost all my faith in the "one owner, all records stuff"
