Default Decisions, Decisions

This post is kind of pointless, but what do I ever post that isn't??

I told my parents I wanted to job shadow at an Audi dealership next summer...let's just say they were less than impressed. My dad wasn't too surprised because he knows that cars have always been my passion, but my mom really wants me to go to college. The fact of the matter is, I have never been that interested in anything other than cars (especially German ones). When we bought my Jeep, we bought it from an Audi dealership, and the salesman I talked to while my parents were signing the papers seemed to love his job. Then my mom started talking about whatif the U.S. went into a recession and the new car market crashed...I pretty much told her that I guess she'd just have to retire to the U.K (woo hoo!! diesels!!). The point is, I'm willing to learn as much as possible about something I actually enjoy learning about.

Any comments??

I'm 21 and my parents are freakin nuts about school, I missed a semester and it was like I literally killed someone....

as far as your passion is concerned....I'd say go for it, but It would prolly make sense to take a couple night classes at the same time...or maybe get your real-estated license...just something to fall back on you know....maybe just do those go at your own pace online classes....whatever your decision is....good luck!...

I am usually jealous of those who genuinely love their jobs, they tend to be much more fun to be around....gl!

Yeah, my parents are really strict when it comes to school. I wouldn't mind taking some night courses, but I don't think I want the full-on college experience...not only because I don't want to put my parents in debt, but also because I loatheschool. I have just never liked anything about it. It's nice to be there to socialize with people and everything, but few to none of themhave evenremotely the same interests as me.

My dad has been in car businesshis whole life and I gained my love of cars from him as a little kid. I saw how much he worked in the business, and I chose another path. It wasn't until I was into my career as an adult that I found out how much he makes. Dude, there is money in the business!

Cheers!

I know...I love the thought of commission. The way I see it, if you really know what you're talking about, people are more likely to come to you. My grandpa was a car salesman for many years (Oldsmobile of all things [:'(]), and he made a prettygood amount of money doing it, too.

When you get beyond "salesman", then you make a commission on the total sales. We're talking big money now!

Cheers!

Yeah, find what you want to do and pursue it. That's the way to be happy. I'm pursuing a career in graphic design. I love Photoshop, Illustrator, etc and art in general and I've always had a passion for cars. I like creating things and seeing them come together. Maybe I should try to find a way to mix the two? By the way, I'm in my second year of collage.

I presume you want to become a salesman? How about working as a tech? I know Audi has a school for techs that you go to for a while, then you start to work at the dealerships and you shadow other techs to get everything down. You make like $20-something an hour or so while doing that and then when you move on your own. I know it would be pretty fun. A few members here on the forum are techs.

Perhaps you can find something to take at school that incorporates your love of cars. That would appease your parents and give you something to fall back on if the sales side doesn't work out. If you're at all interested in the technical side of things you could take class somewhere like Wyotech where you get certified in like 1.5 years. If you're more on the creative side, you could take classes part time or at night and get a degree in design or something.

Whatever you end up doing, good luck to you and I hope you end up doing what you love.

i think there isa valid point in getting a college education no matter what your intrest is. although you may not realize it, the chances of you getting a degree are much greater if you do it right after high school. if you enter thejob market (evenifit's with the intent of only being temporary), it ismore likely that you'll fall into the pitfalls of life and never return to get the degree. and it's hard to do college part time.

my advise.... college is fun. yes it's hard and there is stress, but tell me something in life thatISN'T stressful. do the 4 or 5 years, whatever it takes.thenyou have a degree and you have so many more options. the cold hardfacts are this: employers will choose a college educated person over a high school educatedjust about EVERY TIME! doesn't matter if your degree has anything todo with thejob or not. itjust shows that you are willing to work to get ahead and EVERY employer wants to see that quality.

good luck.
