Uhm, ok. Been a few times, if you have questions, ask. If you want tips, ask...

Top of my head, rent a car with a stick, and trust me GO DIESEL! You have NO idea how fast and torque the uncorked European diesel car can be, and if you are on the autoban, you will want to go fast ONCE, but drive EVERY CHANCE YOU GET, so keeping fuel price down is important.

Drive all you can unless money is tight. Middle of nowhere villages are awsome.

If money is tight, just take a train into towns, take the bus tour the first half day, and that will highlight the town for you and tell you where you want to spend your nights and next few days...

How long will you be there? what are your plans?

oooo sounds like fun.
it's great over there.

if you're planning to travel all over, look into advance purchase of a "euro pass" for the bullet trains. i think it's good for a specific period of time that you designate. you have to check the cost to see of you'll be using it enough to justify it, but it's a great way to get around.
