Default Is grafitti art or vandalism?

I was looking at something (its irrelevant at this point) and got to thinking. Some people consider grafitti an art form, some will say its vandalism. Whats your opinion on that? I dont want you guys to bash or shoot down others, just voice yours. I personally think its a form of art. Today art is so loosely definined though, so its hard to say for sure. Theres no concrete answer, just opinions. I can say I've done some. I have a wall in my house that I use for it. I havent defaced property or whatever they call it. Which brings me to another point. How come the cities dont build a nice big wall for us. Let people paint what they want when they want. Take a pic and let somebody cover it with theirs. That will minimize the grafitti on buildings and stuff. The only catch would have to be, that you cannot have cops sitting there waiting for people doing tags they know. For example if you saw a tag on a building and you see a kid doing that same one on the wall, you cannot arrest him. They dont want people skating in plazas and whatnot and we have a skate arena in the area, so why not do that for grafitti artists?

it is an art form.... done mostly on others people property.

if they do build a wall a few people will do it but the majority of people will still "bomb" other places.

If you've got permission, I don't see any problem. I think that most people have an issue with it because it is majority of graffittidone illegally or is in a spot where it doesn't match it's surroundings and becomes an eyesore.

Yeah its all in the eye of the beholder...
It takes MAD skill to do alot of that work - some beautiful stuff IMO...

at the same time - there are losers who just tag up
a wall w/ rediculous gang names etc... no art at all - just territorial crap that brings
peoples property value down [:@] just by tagging up someones home in a suburban
residential area [:'(]

+1

I think it looks awesome and interesting but if its defacing property than there is no place for it. As long as you have permission from the owner you're fine.

I know a local skate park near me that allows anything to be painted on the concrete bowls as long as you don't paint over anyones stuff. They repaint once a month but not before giving an award for the best tag that month.

Some of it is art...

Anytime someones property is damaged without permission, it's vandalism.

it goes to the whole permission thing and the largemajority of most is just senseless tagging... [>:]

but if a company commissions it then it's art - done without permission - vandalism - plain and simple
