Maybe an EVO or STI?
Well, having been to the track and racing some buddies... I want to upgrade. Just because my A4 is getting close to 100k and I dont want to commit (after 100k, it wont be worth very much).
The car I would really love to have is a Nogaro Blue S4 Avant... which are very very... very hard to come by. I have been searching for a couple months; to no avail. I thought about it, though; its gotta be a nightmare if those turbos or the V6 have problems. I used to have a V6 (VR6 to be exact) and it didnt leave a good taste in my mouth. I love the B5 still so much; that all I want is more power in a practical package. I digress... Regarding the V6 and twin turbos; I have been looking at the EVO and STI. I would LOVE to have another 4 banger, and just one turbo. These cars are MEH of the looks scale, and I dunno if low end torque is so readily available... but I can get over all of that. :) I love the fact they are AWD, gobs of power, set up for the track... stock. This new found want brings a dilema... I dont know shit about these cars... but I know you guys do. Help a brother out!! EVIL |
RE: Maybe an EVO or STI?
If your looking for handleing between those two cars I would go with the STI, however, I have ridden in many EVO's and they are hella quick off the line and from a roll. So really between those two you could not make a wrong choice. Unless you go with the 2006 STI's, that would be a mistake, IMO

RE: Maybe an EVO or STI?
I personally see them both as stock fast awd rally cars. From what I hear, i can agree with badass that the Evo is quicker off the line, but go with the older Evo, I'm a little ehh on the new one. If you were originaly leaning towards the sti or anything, it's still one hell of a freakin car. Both to me are just awsome awd cars.

RE: Maybe an EVO or STI?
I would have thought, with handling characteristics, they would be pretty close. I also thought the STI would be faster, being a more powerful car. In terms of styling, I think the EVO wins (by just a hair) over the STI... especially the NEWEST ones that will come out... holy shit, they are gorgeous! Its like they went back to the Evo 6 or 7 and redesigned that one. http://tinypic.com/e6992x.jpg.

RE: Maybe an EVO or STI?
well i hear bad things about mitsubishi, that they always break down and stuff. but there evos r amazing if audi wasnt around id def buy one. the STI is also a good pick. but with the Evo there is more out there to upgrade it. but personally id get a B6 audi S4.

RE: Maybe an EVO or STI?
Ahhh the all to familiar dilema.
much like anything else-maintenance is key, so the biturbo just needs your attention, like a lady?... [:-] WRX is cool - just not the 06 STi - I agreew/ badassb5... (i think the front end looks foogly) interior is miles apart from Audi though... Evo - is sweet, but theyre like the new integra - everyone has one... Plus Quattro is superior IMO - :) just get a B5S4 & do all the proper preventative maintenance etc. IMO...;) |
RE: Maybe an EVO or STI?
Both are so close it's down to personal preference. Evo has slightly sharper handling and feels a touch more direct. Performance numbers are basically a scratch - you are not going to notice the difference. Both are amazing performance machines, with incredible heritage, at a cheap entry point. Performance per $$$ they can't be beat.
The only 2 real tangible differences that might make your decision easier are: The EVO handles better than the STi. The STi will last 4 times longer than the Evo and will take anything you can throw at it. The Evo is still reliable but does certainly not hold up as well, especially the tranny and the chasis. Either will blow your mind. The amount of grip alone is worth the price of admission, nevermind the pure speed of the damn things. And I have tried nearly everything to REALLY unsettle my STi in the snow and rain, but the damn thing sticks like you would not believe, and that's with HP rubber. Good luck with the new car. |

Any other information I should know about these cars? Does it cost an arm and a leg to repair? Will they last like Audis? Is the MPG terrible? Is there something that needs to be changed at a certain point (like the timing belt upgrade for A4s).

RE: Maybe an EVO or STI?
I have a 2005 EVO 8, and you can no compare it to a B5 S4. Not even close on any account, except the AWD and 4 door thing.
The EVO & STI are very close, but the STI has a lot more luxury stuff in it. The car is quieter, more comfortable, and has things like cruise control. The EVO is just a race car for the streets, it's loud, fast, and very, very nimble. Other then the electronic center diff, there is no other electronic gizmos on it. The evo is a 2.0l, and the STI is a 2.5, so there is a little more low end in the STI, the EVO SUCKS below 3000 rpm's. Mod wise, the evo has a lot more out there, and stuff is a lot cheaper. But the STI has a little more HP & torque stock. Mitsubishi has a awesome warranty, as long as you don't go overboard with the mods. They are also SUPER reliable! The ones that have problems are running 24+ pounds of boost. The big drawback of the STI is the boxer engine, not much fun to work on, like a Porsche 911. Also they have top mount intercoolers that are on top of the engine. Not a very good design. They are both very capable cars, and very fast. Both have insane resale value, a 2003 EVO with 40kmi will still sell for $25k+ as is the STI. Go and drive one and see, you can't compare it to the 3600lbs S4. |
