not very computer savvy

can any one help me put what i guess is called a avatar in my profile

Click on "my profile" above and find the area that talks about avatars.

You can upload an avatar as long as it doesn't exceed the size limits that are posted in the same place. I think it is 145x145.

did you make sure that you were not exceeding the size limits and then click "upload my picture"?
