to rebuild New Orleans .

and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.

Here's some interesting points about the US federal income tax's history...

• In 1913 the tax rate was 1% on taxable net income above $3,000 ($4,000 for married couples), less deductions and exemptions. It rose to a rate of 7% on incomes above $500,000.
• During World War I the top rate rose to 77%; after the war, the top rate was scaled down to a low of 25%.
• During the Great Depression and World War II, the top income tax rate rose again. In the Internal Revenue Code of 1939, the top rate was 75%. The top rate reached 94% during the war and remained at 91% until 1964.
• In 1964 the top rate was decreased to 70% (1964 Revenue Act), then to 50% in 1981 (Economic Recovery Tax Act or ERTA).
• The Tax Reform Act of 1986 reduced the top rate to 28%, at the same time raising the bottom rate from 11% to 15% (in fact 15% and 28% became the only two tax brackets).
• During the 1990s the top rate rose again, standing at 39.6% by the end of the decade.
• The top rate was cut to 35% and the bottom rate was cut to 10% by the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA).

Here's a thought. Didn't all those homeowners pay insurance? I know I do.

How is it that people pay year in and year out for insurance - yet when something like this comes along the insurance companies cry foul then we, the tax payers, shell out???

That, to me, is a serious miscarriage of justice.

Currently, the Iraq/Afghan war alone is costing the US $16 billion an month. That's $192 billion a year. Estimates are that it's costing each household just over $100 a month to fund it.

Wouldn't that be nice to keep that $100 instead of seeing a soldier lose his legs for a people not strong enough to demand and fight for thier own freedoms?

I am not going to pretend that I know what's going on these days in New Orleans, but I can suggest that it isn't just the price of homes that would be repaired. Loss of businesses need to be considered, as well as the enormous cost of repairing INFRASTRUCTURE. Plumbing, electricity, roads etc... there's a whole lot more destroyed than 3 bedroom bungalows. :P

Again, not saying that 250b is a valid figure, I'm just trying to keep this from being a little narrow-minded.

And the seconds since 1959 bit was pretty eye opening. People who have a billion dollars... it's like making 60 bucks an hour (post-tax) working 24 hours a day since '59. That's awesome.

totally agree with the "press 1 for english". That sh!t pisses me off. It has nothing to do with the other language choice(s). It's the fact that there even is a choice. This is an english speaking country, for now, if you don't wanna learn the language then leave. Hell if we wanna be all pc and eo then where the hell are the "press 2 for cantonese" or "press 3 for hindi" choices?

Think about this.....how much does it take to run our Military on a monthly basis without being at war and then subtract that from how much were spending now. Hypotheticaly what would that # be??? You see we still have to fund the military they're just in Iraq doing their training instead of here......make any sense???
