Why Audi?
I was actually looking for a 1.8t GTI, but don't tell anyone. Found my car with the same engine for a steal and boy am I glad I didn't pass it up. I can't imagine if I had a fwd GTI right now. Prolly never would have modded it anywhere near my A4.
You know, its funny, but, I do not remember this question being asked all that often. I've been on these boards for almost 6 years, now, and most threads started by Ne0wBs skirt around the basic question of "Why Audi," but rarely ask directly.
My take is that most Audi owners see themselves as non-conforming-conformist. We ALL like German engineering, style, and performance; but, BMW... EVERYBODY drives a Bee-Emm-fVey. Mercedes? If you've EVER driven the Autobahn, you'd know that the ONLY drivers that are BIGGER d1<&s than BMW dirvers are the @$$hol3 Merc drivers that refuse to get out of teh left-lane because they are going as "fast" as they intend to. Jag-U-aur aur for pompus a$$e$ that like to $pend money for creature-comforts in a high performance, well-handling car that a) lacks performance; and, b) doesn't handle very well. Lexus (and Acura)? One word: RICE. While technically proficient at being cars, both lack anything close to what real enthuiast call character, spirit... SOUL!
Audi (BTW, it is MY contention that the plurl of Audi is Audi) have them ALL faded:

Audi (BTW, it is MY contention that the plurl of Audi is Audi) have them ALL faded:
- Performance that meets or exceeds BMW.
- Luxury that meets or exceeds Mercedes.
- Comfortable, gentlemanly stateliness that meets or exceeds Jaguar.
- Handling on par with a BMW (IMHO); above Mercedes (again, IMHO); and, light-years ahead of Jaguar (IEHO {in EVERYBODIES humble opinion})
- Character/Spirit/Soul that far and above exceeds them ALL.
- Engineering profeciency that meets or exceeds that of the Japanese.
- A racing history that periodically re-writes the record books for years to come.
- Reliability that meets or exceeds the Russians...
I wanted to ask the question "Why Audi" because it was asked on one of my Jaguar Forums "Why Jaguar". It made me wonder what other people see in their cars. It seems everyone sees the same thing in their own cars. Regardless of fact or opinion, any true fanatic thinks there cars are the best.
I without a doubt agree with you with regards to the stint about Lexus/Acura cars that just seem to be lacking without ANY soul, or deep appeal.
I'm not big on BMW. They just seem too uninviting. Too cold and rough.
Mercedes have their bonuses, but seem to be driven buy some jerks (not all Merc drivers mind you). I cannot say much more because the Mercedes forum indefinitely locked me out as a "troll" when I asked "Why Mercedes". Glad to know the Audi people are a bit kinder.
Audi has always had a different appeal. A very tight car, that has a nice exterior, and an inviting interior. But, like all German cars, they seem to have a cold side to them. Of course, the newer Audi's just have a sleeker element to them which allows them to have a more inviting appearance and a bit more flare.
To this I simply quote my grandmother "To each his own".

You are correct in that every enthusiast, regaurdless of his choice, thinks his choice is the best. My wife and I just bought an '09 Maxima. We love this car, and the creature comforts inside are incredible, but I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that my 99.5 A4 handles so much better. Quattro is simply unbeatable. When I tried to accelerate hard in a turn in the Maxima, I felt like I had no control at all, a complete disconnect between road, car, and driver. In my Audi, I feel like the road, car, and driver are completely in tune, no matter how hard I push the limits. That, to me, is the difference. Now, I understand I'm trying to throw a Nissan into the mix, which really isn't fair, but it's what I have for a reference point, and the Maxima really isn't anything to shake a stick at...
My partner and I have driven Saab's (4x900/3x9000) for 6 years, Volvo's(1x240/1x850) for 4 years, BMW's for 14 years (1x318/1x323/2x325), Audi 4 years (1xA6) a dozen or so American and jap cars. We currently have a e46 325ci and the C5 A6. I have come to accept that we will always have 1 bmw in the family for my partner to drive. He will drive nothing else. Of all the euro cars I have owned, driven I liked my A6 the most. I have never really liked any of our BMW's or Saabs. I loved my 850 and had it not had 334k miles on it and needed a lot of work, I would still be driving it.
With all that said. Why Audi? For me, I went to the dealer to pick up the V70 to replace my dieing 850 only to learn the car sold earlier that day. Needing a car, I reluctantly test drove the A6 (never liked Audi's unreliable reputation). Needless to say I loved the car. The interior was 10x's nicer and better built than the V70 and it drove far better. I took a risk and bought it, now 4 years later, and 170k miles on the clock, I find my A6 has been one of the most reliable cars we have ever owned.
Looking forward, when it's time to put the A6 out to pasture, I will probably get myself an A4 Avant or an A3. I have come to appreciate the well crafted interior, the build quality that is second to none and it's timeless beauty. None of our Saabs/Volvo's/BMWs have ever impressed me with their interior build quality.
Why Audi? Audi = Quality.
