Do I dare buy a high mileage RS4?
 

Hi!

I'm new here, this is my first post.

I live in Finland, and cars are very expensive here.
I currently own 2 BMW's an M5 E39 and a 330Ci E46.

I found a RS4 for sale today, and it's the only one at this time available.

The car looks great in pictures. It is a 2000year model, loaded with everything, some MTM stuff (I don't know what).

But now to the ugly bit, the car has had 1owner BUT he has done 236.000KM in the car! Ouch! I mean how much will the 2.7l engine with 420hp endure? It's 155,5hp/litre. My M5 has 80hp/l and the 330 77hp/l. The asking price is 49.990euros.

What do you think?

Any other high mileage RS4 out there???

high millage, the turbos might be at there end. however the internals are strong in audies. also if manual, clutch might be at the end too, you wont feel it couse it is self adjusting. auto however might or might not be bad.
the idea of turbos is that the car can get more that its capable to suck in. so basicaly the turbo can hold 15PSI, the engine theoreticaly produses douple its original power. so original its 190HP so the car can produse 380, plus tuning and you get even more.

236,000km = 146,650 miles
all that in 5 years...it's probably highway...not that bad

I think if you have 2 BMW and cars are expensive, then power to ya

and yeah high mileage would make me a little nervous but he;s right it must be highway miles. Talk to the owner check out the car, drive it around a little. If you buy it, keep a chunk of cash around in case you have some sudden problems, but you'll probably be alright.

Yeah, he is probably a commuter. So you guys think it can take 236K KM? Is the car supposed to have 380hp or 420? This one has 420 supposedly....

'00 RS4 came with 370BHP, not 420bhp.

Maye it's been juiced up a bit?

If it's in good shape, full service history etc, go for it.

Audi engines if looked after will go on and on...

You gotta wonder if it has been driven hard for all of those miles. And then wonder how much that matters for the car's future health and cost to you. That sounds like a lot of miles on a tricked out engine to me.

236,000km = 146,650 miles
definitely motor way driving and good for the engine, low miles are more damaging because of lack of service and use "engine draws condensation and doesnt boil out on short journeys causing excess wear".

a friend had a car and only did 5k in 6 years "never serviced" because he was going on mileage head gasket went "surprise surprise" after checks it might as well have done 200,000k miles.

service history like oil and filter changes are very important, of course in engineering there are many factors to consider but I wont bore you with that;)

before i purchased my s4 last summer, i was looking into the rs4 and found a few down in spain; 2000 and 2001 some single, some 2 owner averaging 170,000 KM and going for prices between 51,000 and 56,000 euro. that many km 6 months after i was looking going for a couple of grand less still seems too expensive. like the other posts stated, you may get good deal, but have to invest in replacement parts in the near future. if you have the opportunity to travel around, i would suggest looking in other countries for the right one and driving it back home. could be one hell of a road trip man!
