To drive or not to drive?? (Pic too)
Hey all,
I really need some advice...I dont know if it's safe to be driving around if I might have a turbo leak. I dont want to do more damage...
I have a chipped '00 S4 with about 130K miles. I just moved to Colorado from Chicago and it is suddenly running a bit weird. First off...the fuel gauge has grown quite confused and will dip down slowly to about 1/2 (when its full) and then back up again at random intervals. Now I am experiencing a little lag in the turbos...but after the initial surge. I go to power, the turbos kick in...then it gets flat for a second (not terribly extreme, but certainly noticeable) and then I get one more little surge afterwards. I have not heard any loud "pops," so from the forums I gather that it is not a blown turbo. I am not getting any "cricket" noises like a couple other drivers...just the fuel gauge and the unfortunate lag. Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

(p.s. unfortunately, the only pic i have on this computer is this badly photoshopped one to make it dolphin grey...)

What is your Altitude? You were at sea level, moving up in the mountains, will give you less power, & could give you some turbo lag.
However, there still might be a problem. Drive it to a local auto parts store & have them see if there are any stored codes.
It might also take the car some time to adapt to the thinner air, this might throw a MAF code on you, since the air is much thinner.

Awesome. Thank you for the suggestions. Is noone else responding because I'm new...or because I failed to find this topic in the backlogs??
I didn't realize that it could take some time to adjust to different altitidues (though I was aware it would affect performance). I am at about 5,350 ft above sea level.
p.s. what is the audi iPod you have listed??

It takes the place of the cd changer. Runs around $150 @ the Dealer.
erratic fuel gauge most likely replace the sending unit. power surge possibly boost leak. or maybe it just doesnt like the thin air. pull the intercooler hoses and check for oil(careful it may dump out).
