How much milage can an B5 S4 engine take?
 

Hi -a newbie here,

I am looking at buying a high milage B5 S4 Avant (112k).

It appears to have been well maintained and not abused but are these engines normally prone to failure or expensive re-builds? How far can they go?

My dad is the original owner of his 2001 S4 and it has 205000 on it, all stock.Hesdone all thescheduled maint and up keep. Its al in the way you take care of it.

I've got around 128K on my S4, and she still seems to be running strong. I hope to 200K before I let my car go. My dad already told me that whenever I am ready to sell it he'll take it off my hands. The maintainence is the most important part of the life of an S4 (B5). Along with how the previous owners drove it.

I have 136k on mine, and climbing fast. I'll keep it until about 200k then sell. Make sure the car you are buying has the timing belt service done. Also, I would worry about clutch and turbos. If those are done, you're golden for a long time. This car requires a timing belt at 90K. Don't assume that this person has done it.

Thanks, the timing belt has been done but those turbos are a lottery I guess. Is a clutch job an expensive exercise?

Clutch is about 1K total if you avoid the dealer. I found a transmission shop that seemed to know a lot about Audi and had done some S4's for $450 labor. I bought the RS4 clutch from www.ecstuning.com for about $500.

I'm atabout 113k on the whip, and she is the daily driver for 60 miles a day 5 days a week. I also rough her up a little bit every now and then.

Engine is totally fine for quite some time, there is a guy over @ Audiworld that has STOCK turbo's & over 200,000mi!

But the weak parts are going to the electronics, & turbo's, then also over 100,000mi, you are looking at replacing the suspension, both shocks & arms.
