Problem: 17865 - Exhaust Gas Temp. Sensor 2

Hi all,

I had my brother's friend come by to vag both my S4 and his new TT and found that there's a problem with my car. No light has come on yet, so its not a major problem, and we kind of know what it could be but I just want to double check with anyone online to see if they have experienced this before.
Here is the Vag-Com code:
17865 - Exhaust Gast Temp. Sensor 2 (G236): Open or Short to Plus
P1457 - 35 - 10 -- Intermittent

I have a 2001.5 S4.

Our best guess is that the secondary O2 sensor is having problems and that needs to get replaced. Let me know if anyone else has had this problem, and how they managed to fix it. Thanks!

Also, if the O2 sensor were to be replaced, I've found two different types: "left-side" and "right-side" secondary O2 sensors (post-cat). Which one would my car need?

No, it's the exhaust gas temp sensor (EGT). There expensive, like $300+
It's telling you sensor 2, so I believe it's the passenger side.

You will need to replace it soon.

Hey, umm..so how much time do you think I will have? I am going to try to replace it as soon as possible but I am currently low in terms of finances for the fix. I should be able to fix this by next month though.

I just had the passenger side replaced $321 for the part and $245 for labor. I was told this part caused my car not to produce full boost as well as not run efficiently. I did notice better performance after the repair.

well i found the part on ECS tuning for like $280 (probably around $290 shipped) and read the write up on how to install it (http://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/2004537.phtml) so I will probably do the install myself. It looks only slightly harder than replacing the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (which I did last month). I'm just surprised that two sensors have broken after only two months of ownership of this vehicle (and it only had 45k miles on it when i bought it!). I will try to get it replaced as soon as i can....
