Default Problem with Lights - 2006 S4

Brand new to this forum and brand new to Audi.

I just recently bought an 2006 S4 last week. The morning after I made the purchase, I started the car, and got an error message saying the right parking light was out. Checked the light, and it was out. Later that day, I started my car, and no warning message. Checked the light, and it was fine.

A couple days later, I got a right dipped headlight message while driving. I noticed the right headlight was out. I turned off the headlights, and turned it back on. Fixed the problem.

Next day, I receive a message, License plate light out. I checked, and one of the lights was out. This message stayed on all day, but finally turned off toward the end of the night. I check the light, and sure enough, light is back on.

I tried searching for related problems, but haven't had any luck. Is this a known issue? I've been keeping my lights on "Auto", not sure if that makes a difference.

Any help is much appriciated.

Default Problem with my head lights

I too have been having problems with my headlights. I get the message "dipped headlights are out" and no matter the light position, they will flicker and occasionally go out completely. This is a problem when I am driving dark wooded back roads. Hopefully someone can answer this thread and help us out!

Happens to me all the time as well in my s4...try leaving the lights off completely (not on auto) you put the car into drive or take park brake etc off and then turn them on..this work most days for me but still happens sometimes when I hit hard bumps but that just may be due to aftermarket sways coilovers so lower ride height etc...(also had custom xenon foglights installed with small ballists which may have some effect)when this happens if I turn them off and on real quick they work fine...

Guys....your headlight bulb is going out. Just go to the dealer and get a new one and replace the defective part. I've had it happen to me and a few of my friends. Never had a problem since.

Haha I'm not that dumb bro....all 4 of my lights including fogs aren't gonna burn out at once lol...already had all bulbs tested and they told me it had to be something in the wiring...I've had xenon bulbs burn out on other cars and they don't take this long to go (15k miles) since it first started happening....no to mention they will change colors and start to fade when they are burning out not just turn on and off randomly...thanks for the worthless smart *** advice though! Oh and I would never in a million years go to the stealer for a damn bulb I can order online and put in myself for half the cost

The xenon gas inside the bulb is weak, leaked out to a point where the bulb stops functioning 100% all the time. That's why when you turned the lights off then on again the bulb worked. When a bulb goes bad it can go off and on on you. I just got off the phone with a guy and while he was driving the bulb came on and off on him, and the dipped light bulb in the dash went on then off as well.

Sorry you're so damn defensive. I never called you dumb. I was trying to help YOU diagnosis YOUR problem. I chose to use the dealer to source this part and install it myself because I don't drive at night with one headlight. A few bucks more is worth my safety. You guys just **** people off that are trying to offer help. Sometimes people offer advice that doesn't solve your problem...GET OVER IT and appreciate the fact that someone took the time to answer YOUR question. Hope you find a resolution.

Acutally dragon and Jeff are correct with needing to replace the bulb. When the xenon is burning out or leaking out it will not always beable to draw the same current or enough power to for the headlight to function properly. And you might want to consider replacing both bulbs at the same time even if one still works because the xenon content/amount will be different in a brand new bulb and one that is a year or two old since it has been burning out. The new bulb will be pulling a stronger current due to more xenon gas present which could lead to a sooner or earlier failure of the other bulb. And you dont have to go to the dealership for a bulb you can pick D1S bulbs up from anywhere. Dipped headlight is a know issue on the Audi platform and you will see this same solution on other forums as well especially AZ. When I had a dipped headlight the first thing i did was replace both bulbs because it is the quickest and cheapest troubleshooting you could do right off the bat and I have not had the issue since. But if replacing the bulbs does not work you can move on to the ballasts, wiring, etc etc. Now I am not sure why robmac you are losing all different kinds of lights.

Thanks Beastose, This sounds like it is exactly what I need to do. I need to get after it and change the dang bulbs. I've been living with the issue for too long. Frustrating but not a deal breaker, as I can usually get the headlight back on with a flick of the on/off switch.
