proper launch rpm

3500-4000 rpms is a good range.
3500-4000 rpms is a good range.
The S4's peak torque begins at 1850 (stock) and stays with ya for quite a while... I would probably launch at 2000 ~ 2500 RPM at the highest.. No need for any higher than that, unless you can afford a new tranny or rear differential. If your upgrades include bigger turbos and you have strenghtened the drivetrain, you could always go a little higher than that to stain within the powerband.
Launching an AWD car at anything higher than 3500 RPM is risky business. The amount of stress this places on the drivetrain (it actually causes the driveshaft to twist out of specifications) can cause serious damage. For best performance, you should always learn your powerband and decide from there. There is no "static number" and it varies from car to car.
I've done a 4 to 5 grand once or twice. Sketchy. A lot of fun and great results, if done right, but definitely not recomended. I got quite a stink from the tranny/diff/clutch etc I don't think the car liked it very much. I stick to the 2 to 2 1/2 grand. So, in short, you can do it, but it aint good.
I'll play with the 3500 range. I'm still getting used to the car and still trying to find out all this stuff, like how to launch nice and yet still get a great launch. I'm still shifting to fast from 1st to 2nd and sometimes "miss", god I hate that sound. Anyone else experiencing this? I like to think I'm pretty damn good on the shifting speed thing but, like I said, I sometimes "overfill the cup".
launch on 4 wheelers is very tricky. u can not spin all 4 wheels unless u are on wet ground. in the dry, i found that all the 4-5,000 rpm launches only burn clutches. i think that the best way to do a clean take off is by reving engine couple of times, and then catch it while rpm is dropping at arround 2,700-3,200 rpm... if you do it right, it will grab it right away, right in the peak of the power range, and not cut the clutch. that is how i like to do it...

I like to 'launch' at around 900rpm
