S4 noob here, please help answer a few questions
Hi guys, I am graduating from college and looking for a new car. i currently run a 95 Z28 that put down 330 hp and 350 lbs of tq. but it is not practical anymore. so now i want an S4. I was looking at the B5's and have heard good things. are there any major problems with them? i hear the throttle body boot fails, but how are tannys, turbos, and other major parts? i am very familiar with cars and do most maintenance/mod work at my parents house since my dad has a lift, so i am not scared to get into any big projects.... also, i want the audi to run like my camaro (12.50's) so what are some popular mods to get the audi runnin' well? i assume a chip to raise boost, maybe downpipe back exhaust. please let me know what mods and companies are popular. thanks for any help. and i am sorry for the long post. i am just excited to get into an S4 as soon as I can.
Define "practical" (in your terms). Audi is an expensive car to maintain (particualrly for someone without a lot of money...makes sense?)...and you will need to spend $ to make a B5 S4 do 12s...etc
my definition of my current car not being "practical" is that it gets 12 mpg, is lowered 3 inches and can't make it into a parking garage, has a roll cage so it only seats one passenger, and has a completely modified suspension more suited for a road course than a bumpy road. i was hoping that the audi would be a nice sedan that offers performance and flexability. i also understand that it takes money to drive/upkeep an S4 and that is not a problem.
I have heard that the turbos on B5 S4's sometimes have turbo failure and it is a pretty extensive job to swap them out when they go. An S4 is definitely a nice sedan that offers performance and flexibility though.
thanks for the info. i have heard that the turbos go but i am not too concerned about that. as far as turbo work i have had two saab 9-5's that both had stage 3 turbo upgrades that i installed myself.... although i have never seen the engine compartment in an S4, is it crowded in there or is there room to work?..... and i was wondering about chipping an S4. it seems like a popular thing to do but no one seems to be running bigger injectors or fuel pressure regulators. is anyone having problems with leaning out under high boost or is the stock stuff capable of handling high boost? thanks.
chipping it will only require you to upgrade the dv's and the TBB (throttle body boot) intercoolers should but dont have to be upgraded w/ a chip.. stock ones have plastic end tanks.
think of the engine compartment like this: 10 lbs of potatoes in a 5lb sack
