I have an '02 WRX (selling), had an '01 S4 that I lemon lawed in California, and now have an '04 S4. The WRX is endlessly modifiable, but it's still a go cart. The '06's have better sound proofing, optional leather, sunroof, etc. but you're talking $30k. None compare to the 4.2 V8 IMO. However, for what you are willing to spend, I'd go WRX.

Pay a little more and get an STi?

Both are fine cars in their own right so whatever you choose you should be happy with. Good luck.

 

Hah sorry to disappoint you but that IS my car. I decided that the WRX felt too cheap for me. I test drove the 06 WRX and drove really nice, but just didn’t feel anywhere near as solid as the S4. I love the huge powerband of the S4. The reason I didn't go for the STi is because of insurance, it's killer for someone my age.
