I have a 2005 (B6) s4 and recently moved to San Francisco.
I plan to drive up to Tahoe this winter and need to get tire chains in case there is a major snowfall.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what types of chains work best for an s4?
Also, given quattro AWD, do I need 4 chains, or will 2 do - and if so, on the front or on the back?

Any suggestions/experiences you guys can share would be really appreciated.

Just get a decent set of snow tires. Studded snow tires if you need them to feel safe. YOu dont need chains.

 

Your owner manual should say no chains (because they will damage your car). I think Audi makes a set of cables that is like 100-150. But seriously, I take my A6 avant up to the snow all the time with out chains, cables, or even a decent set of snow tires (just well broken in all weathers). When you go up to the snow and you always see those Subaru's go smoking past you driving way too fast, imagine your Audi being that sure footed if not more. Front and rear diff. lockers and quattro are more than enough for the snow.

 

Snow tires are the way to go, qand studded snow tires if hte winters are that bad, but you should never use chains, it will cause some damage that you dont wanna have to deal with.

 

Thanks guys. I ended up buying a set of Dunlop M3s.
I spoke with Audi and their official recommendation is not to use chains because there is not enough space between the wheel and wheel well.
