Default Tranny work

Hey Guys and gals, Ok so thr ride in question is a 2000 B5 S4, on occasion it will not go into gear, you can get it in 3rd and force it, once it pops into third it seems to work ok for a little bit, but then it goes back to not shifting into any gear. I am thinking clutch or maybe linkage any body have any ideas? Also either way it looks like were pulling the tranny this weekend, if anybody wants to cruise by and check it out(So Cal - Rancho Santa Margarita) Pm me for directions.

I have heard of the infamous 1-2 syncros, but the trany does not want to shift into any gear weather the car is on or off. The weird thing about it is that the car worked perfectly fine on the way to work and when I tried to go to lunch, it would not go into any gear. The clutch still feels normal, there is about the same resistance when pressed. When I left work hours later it was giving me trouble again, then all out of nowhere it worked perfectly fine and I made it home.It feels like something is not linking correctly or something has fallen out of sync. I am still learning about this car and would greatly appreciate any input. I have a strong feeling it is the clutch from whatI have been reading. Either way, like superdug said, we plan on pull'n the tranny this weekend and tips/pointers would be awesome.

See if you can disconnect the linkage from the transmission. With the linkage off, run the shifter through the gears. Make sure it is not a shifter issue before you drop the transmission.

I pulled the shifter boot away and all the likage in there looks fine everything is in place as it should be. I still have slight suspision it could be the linkage on the other end. Is there a way to check that without dropping the tranny?

check the clutch master and slave. I had the same problem after I had a trans rebuild. Got it back and in the cold mornings in the winter the car wouldnt go into gear at all. put a new master and slave in and everything was butter.

I just had the same problem with my 2001 S4. The output shaft on the transmission was completely corroded and rusted. The Audi dealer was boggled to why this would have happened. The dealer ended up giving me a break on the total bill. This corrosion caused premature clutch failure. The car only had 50,000 miles on it.
