V8 vs. turbo
Lots of folks looking for an S4 come here to ask the question about whether to go with the B7 or an older turbo. Inevitably the response is to go with the turbo because you can get more power out of more mods etc etc. Well, cast one vote for the V8. Of course, this always depends on what you're looking for, but personally, I don't drag race or necessarily care if I do 0-60 in 4.9 or 5.5 secs. Granted, I put on Milltek exhaust, chipped it, etc, but my point is this...
I got an Audi because I love the blend of luxury, gizmos, looks, handling and speed. For pure speed I ride my bike, as there's no car that comes close to the accelleration (0-60 in about 3 secs). Anyway, the percentage of time I spend trying to break a 12-second 1/4 mile is, uh, never. The percentage of time I spend smiling because my car growls like a beast and has the rumble of a muscle car, and isn't exactly slow, is far greater than never.
So, if you want to mod like a madman and your bottom line is speed, go with the turbo. If you enjoy the feel and sound of a fat engine, get a B7 and throw some Millteks on it; you won't be disappointed.
By the way, some kid pulled up next to me in a Lexus GS400 and wanted to race me, so I obliged. I blew him away. It was fun, and I can definitely see the lure of the faster platform.

I have the v6 bi-turbo, although I understand your point, so I don't disagree.
Plus with newer models you might have warranty which is a real peace of mind.
Remember though, most people are on a budget, and it might allow them to purchase a turbo model outright, and then have paycheck money for performance, verses, a loan and strapped for cash...

I have a 2000 S4, love the car, however you could give me a new one any day of the week. Lets face it, new car-warranty, nobody has beat on it, technology is superior. If you want to take the time and mod out an older car, and spend the time and money, then obviously go with a B5. The choice is up to you, but I've got to be honest, that B7 is a sexy car and you can't beat that new car smell
I think 85% of us here have the B5 S4.
If you want more luxury & gizmo's, get the B7! If you want more power & more problems, get the B5.
Really, they are both great cars, but you can't compare them. One is brand new, or almost new, the newest B5 is now 6 years old. They are also in totally different price brackets! Beat up B5's are now below $10k, if you can find a beat up B7 it's going to be in the $30's.

I've decided on the B7- for most if not all of the reasons you mentioned, yesss4.
Picking it up next week (only a short 1,000 mile drive from home...)
Excited about the goodies. Performance wise, nothing comes close to the bike anyway (nothing I can afford that is).

yesss4 you took the words right out of my mouth "my car growls like a beast and has the rumble of a muscle car" just bought a high mileage 85k 2004 S4 for under $20k course it's not running at the moment, misfire on cylinder #8, just ordered an ignition coil though, hope that'll fix it up.
