Default Looking at a 2000 S4

I've owned several Audis and VWs, including a B5 A4, but this would be my first S-line car. When I look at this car, what are some redflags that I should look for? It's a 2000 6-spd with 83,000 miles. I know that's prime time for a timing belt replacement (my parents lost an A4 Avant engine to a timing belt about that mileage) so that's something I need to ask about. I've read online that they're impossible to replace and cost $6000 and I've read that a decent shadetree mechanic can do it or have it done for $1200.

Also, is there any way to get a feel for what kind of condition the turbos are in besides driving it (ie physical evidence)?

Sorry for the same questions you probably get 1000 times, but any help is appreciated.

i always advise to remove the skid plate and check for oil leaking on it. also run a diagnostic scan with vag-com if there is a check engine light on.

definitely ask about the t-belt. specifically the tensioner for the t-belt. see if the tranny is in good condition. 1st and 2nd gear syncros go out like crazy.

Timing belt shouldn't cost anywhere near 6000, you could damn near go stage 3 for that. I paid about a grand to have mine done with wp and tensioner and all that. The aformentioned synchros and turbos are the big S4 specific items, the others are really the same common issues that B5 A4s have.

Full TB replacement with all parts and fluids for a 2.7T A6 was $900 at my indie shop with a $78/hr rate. Book is 6 hours, so it might cost $600 more at a dealer. I've had it done twice now.
