My '97 1.6 (petrol) gets about 35mpg on a mixture of motorway and town driving.

The tank is about 55 litres, so assuming you're in the UK, at the moment this comes to about 55 x 1.15 = 63.25 for...

RE: Ecu Location??

It's behind the engine bulkhead at the base of the windscreen. You need to remove the windscreen wipers and panel(s) behind them as if you were going to change the wiper motor.

Be careful...

RE: Tricky One...!

Sounds like a dodgy sensor or sensor connection - engine speed, road speed, air mass, etc.

Would be worth getting somebody to read the fault codes from the ECU to see if any of the sensors are...

RE: Yellow froth, losing coolant

I had much the same problem (1997 A3 1.6). It did eventually require head gasket replacement. My thoughts:

- The yellow froth *is* due to normal condensation, especially as your daily drive...

RE: Hard to start- idles at 2000rpm

Good to hear you got it sorted; it's always useful to hear about the solutions to problems as well as what's wrong in the first place!

RE: Hard to start- idles at 2000rpm

Couple of possibilities:

- Throttle body might be out: you can reset it by turning the ignition to the position before 'Start' and leaving it like that for a minute or so before starting the...

RE: 97 audi a3 wiper problem?

The same kind of thing happened to me recently - at the end of a cycle (i.e. when the wipers stopped at the bottom of the windscreen) they would judder about for a few seconds.

I ended up taking...

RE: Problem with cylinder head A3 2.0 TDI thick white smoke...

Both a leaking cylinder head and gasket are going to allow coolant into one or more cylinders, and/or oil into the cooling system. Once coolant is in the combustion chambers the steam/smoke coming...

RE: Problem with cylinder head A3 2.0 TDI thick white smoke...

Presumably they've checked the head gasket for leaks? If it's leaking instead of the head, and they've already got the cylinder head off, it is pretty cheap and easy to replace.

I had a similar...

RE: no brake lights !!how many / where are brake light switches?!

I had to replace the brake switch on mine recently because it was sticking, and it does operate 'in reverse,' if you like.

When the brake pedal is not pressed, the plunger on the switch is...

RE: Head Gasket Again? Please No!

Hi,

I just posted a thread on what happened with the head gasket on my '97 1.6 A3 - might be of some use.

Based on what you say - the creamy oil is likely to be due to short trips, it...

Head Gasket Replacement

I've just had the head gasket replaced on my '97 A3 - thought I would go through what happened in case it's any use to anybody else. Apparently it's very unusual to have to change the gasket/cylinder...

RE: powerloss once up to temperature

Try the engine speed (RPM) sensor. When I had this kind of problem - very erratic power and random stalling - it turned out to be faulty. Replacing it sorted everything out.

RE: problems! please help!

Try it with a window open - it could be that it's just the air pressure inside the car causing the doors not to shut properly. I tend to find this happens a lot with VWs/Audis because they're made...

RE: Wierd noise when flooring the pedal

It could be that you have the Traction Control System (TCS) which uses the ABS sensors in reverse to stop the wheels spinning when you give them too much power or the road surface is slippery - I...

If doing either of these has no effect, you might have to reset...

RE: 2001 Audi A3 - Need to remove stereo!

Basically all you need is two thin flat pieces of metal or plastic, like nail files. If you push these far enough into the slots in a straight line, you will disengage the springy pieces of metal...

RE: Rattling Passenger Seat ('97 A3)

Thanks for the suggestion - a bit of creaking goes on from time to time so I'll give it a go.

It is possible to disconnect the MAF sensor and drive, although in my case it just caused the revs to become more erratic - especially when idling - so I'm not sure how useful this is in diagnosing...
