Question 2001 or 2001.5 S4 Avant

Hello,

I have searched all over audiforums.com, audiworld, google, etc. for the answer and there does not seam to be one. Read all the FAQ's etc.

One site said all Avants are 2001.5 or newer. Another said 02.01 build date or newer (does that include the 02.01 build or just after that date?). Some say polished mirrors are .5 some say that means sport package.

Does anyone know the build date of the .5 vs the standard 2001 for the avants? I am looking at buying a second s4 (tip and avant compared to my current 00 6M) have one picked out, but unsure if it is 2001 or 2001.5 (out of state so I cant simply look at it). It has new emblems on the front, and the tach, but old on the rear (rear might have had a fender bender that bent the gate).

Any help is really appreciated. I would prefer the 2nd vehicle to be 2001.5.

Thanks.

I think the key difference between 01 and 01.5 is just newer badge they did away with the old //S badge. 01.5 has the newer one still used today. Also the 01.5 comes with ESP and I think upgrades in diverter valves and upgraded oil cooler and some other minor things. I was trying to find out if my sedan was and 01 or 01.5 and I just put it next to my friends 01 and mine had the key features like esp and newer badges. So im guessing that the avant should share those aswell.

Pretty sure all Avants are 01.5 or 02, but I'm only basing that on the badging since they all have the newer 'S4' logo.

ESP is not a feature of an 01.5 ESP was included in all 2001 models.

Thanks for the comments. I was also under the impression that most or all Avant's are the 2001.5 or newer based on badges.

Oil lines are the only reason I want the .5, as it has high miles.

IMO dosnt matter if its an early or late model because the pass. side oil feed line is still run too close to the exhaust manifold. Late model has no f-hose...i suppose thats an improvement.

Both cars are going to have these problems (except f hose)
  • K03 turbos fail - Often replaced with K04 turbos from the B5 RS4.
  • Control Arms - Common to the B5 platform.
  • Wheel bearings - Common to the B5 platform.
  • Dash cluster display LED develops lines - Rebuild kit available.
  • Throttle body boot (TBB) leaks - Often replaced with an aftermarket boot.
  • Diverter Valves - Often replaced with 710N valves.
  • Coolant after run pump fails and leaks - Shine a flashlight under the intake manifold and look for dried pink G12 residue.
  • Valve cover and cam tensioner gaskets leak.
  • Central lock Pump
  • ABS Module
  • Seats wobble
  • Rearview mirror leaks
  • N75 valve
  • Window Regulators
  • Internal spring in interior door handle fails
  • Accesory belt tensioner noise
  • Powersteering Pump
  • Spider hose
  • F hose
  • Boost Leaks
  • Bosch MAF Failure
  • Coil Packs
  • Ignition Control Amplifiers
  • PCV Valve
  • Bose speakers
  • EGT Sensors
  • o2 sensors
  • Climate control fan buzzes
  • SAC mechanism on stock and RS4 Clutch Pressure Plates
  • Clutch Slave Cylinder

easiest way to tell besides the badge and ESP is look for no F-Hose to the left of the throttle body.
