1996 Audi A4 2.8quattro in the Northern VA area
I'm making an odd request. If no one responds it'll be okay.
Here's my story.
i have a 1996 audi a4 2.8 quattro. 2 years ago the ac went out. No matter how many times i hit the snowflake, the ac compressor would not kick in.
With a little help from a friend, we rigged a switch to direct power the compressor, and poof, cold ac.
I recently made it my mission to try to solve this problem. I had it at a local place called Nails. They are an audi specialist. They checked high side switch, ac compressor, ac condenser, ac clutch relay, and they checked all wires that control the AC that run into the main climate control unit.
When directly powered, the ac works and the ac condenser fan works. The ac clutch relay is brand new (bought off ecs tuning) and the wiring to the relay is all excellent. Nails said that the problem is the climate control unit is NOT sending the signal properly.
Yesterday, i took the unit out, took off the face plate, resoldered all the solder points, and cleaned the board best as i could. The screen no longer flickers and the buttons seem a bit more responsive, however, the ac still would not come on. The snowflake shows up on the screen and then quickly disappears, never engaging the ac compressor.
I’ve said all that to say this:
I do not want to spend 1200 dollars in vain on a new climate control unit. I would like to know that it will solve the problem.
If there is someone local with the same car that has working ac that will allow me to test their climate control unit in my car I would be VERY appreciative. It is easy to take out the climate control unit, and it’s easy to hook up. I want to see if it engages the compressor. If it does work, I’ll probably just order the unit from audi.
The part number for my unit is 8DO 820 043H
Thanks for listening to me guys.

Yes, basically running the AC 'manually'.
a) to get the car cold (even if not 'controlled')
b) to see if the rest of the system (compressor, clutch, leaks, etc.) is working ok.
Is the only thing required to run (via a switch) 12V to the AC clutch? If so, best place to splice the 12V in and how?
How did you do it?
Still looking for what I now believe is the only module (ending in "H") that will run on my 1996 car with Denso compressor, and hoping that this will fix my issues long term.
