Vag-Com Generic Questions

I am considering acquiring this capability. However, I do have some questions. I have browsed through the Vag-Com site, but have not called them as yet. I wanted to get input from this group first.
Perhaps, I should say that, for me, this is a tool that would enable me to diagnose a problem, help me decide if it is a DIY, if the mechanic I generally use can handle the repair, or if I need to go to a dealer. Being retired, I am probably a bit older than most here and health issues do affect some decisions concerning repairs. The Audi I have is a 1998 B5 A4, which I enjoy very much and is the most comfortable car I have ever owned. Now to the questions.
Is there a Laptop that is preferred? Ease of Use, physical size, durability, etc. I do not at this time own a laptop or a tablet. So, one will need to be aquired.

There seems to be several "purchase" decisions to make. first seems to be a choice of VCDS, VCDS Mobile, or VCDS Lite. If I understand the Vag-Com site correctly, VCDS Lite is quite limited in what it can do. VCDS Mobile seems to be for Wii Fi devices. That leaves VCDS as the seemingly logical choice. Is this what is generally used here?

After that there is a choice between Professional or Enthusiast. Since I am very far from being a Professional, I would fall into the entusiast category and then have 7 options to choose from. Which of these is generally thought to be the best choice anmong the members here?

Sorry for the long post. Any guidance, advice, comments gratefully accepted.

HI all,

Tack on I have 2000 A6 Quattro Avaunt and preffered to DIY, but on simpler cars in the past. I also am interested in VAG reader software and would like to get one that can read out the data and alarms from all modules not just a code read reset I have an Actron that can do that. Seems to be alot of choices out there and some variations in the Car electronics version over the years any body know what version was in use in 2000? or have a recommendation for the reader?
Thanks
Brian

I just ordered a hand held Audi/VW code reader/changer for my 2000 A6. Will let you know if it does what it is claimed to do. Just $50.00 from China.

Cool Please keep me posted

I am particularly interested to know if the unit will read the MFG data back from the various subsystem modules. Isuspect it will only read and clear ODBII codes but if it gives Audi specific outputs and reads modules I really want to know about it.

Thanks
Brian
