winter tire recommendation please? size, brand, factory?
I would like to get winter tires and wheels for an 2010 A6 avant with sport suspension. It has 19" summer tires (255/35.) The factory winter package offered by Audi dealer seem outrageously priced- $2600 for 18" Continental. I would appreciate any advice you can offer. I have been told for performance to seek out the narrowest tire possible. I seem to be getting conflicting advice on what will fit car and what brands to go with. And I wonder about the importance of buying factory wheels/tires.
Thank you!
Thank you!

It may be a little late, however better late than never.
You don't need to run 18's in the winter. Not to mention the smaller the rim, the smaller the tire size which means you save money.
According to tirerack.com, you can pickup a set of General Altimax Arctic's in 235/45/17's that should fit fine. Granted, you'll need another set of wheels. Not to mention the 235's are much thinner than the 255's that come on your car from the factory. Throw in a set of cheap $99/wheel Elbrus I06's in 17x7.5 and you're good to go.
Regardless, Factory wheels are no where near necessary. Just make sure you are buying wheels that are going to fit your car.
Out the door you can get an alloy wheel/snow tire combo for $852+shipping.
Check out http://www.tirerack.com , it's very easy to use and is well worth your time.
