Default Help. Engine won't crank.

I'm brand new to the world of Audis. I recently purchased a 2002 A4 Quattro with the 1.8t engine. It had a known broken timing belt. I took the head off and rebuilt the valves because several were bent. . I was able to get the engine running, although it had a rough idle and when cold. The car would stay running while in park, but would die if driven more than 1/2 mile or so. I was driving it around the block yesterday and the engine just died. Now it won't crank at all. All I hear is a small click when I turn the starter like its not engaging or the engine is seized. I had the battery checked and it is fine. What else could this be? I'm thinking maybe a starter? Thanks in advance.

Could be a starter problem, but, the car dying when driven half a mile or more indicates a much bigger problem.

Timing belt broken and bent valves are clear signs of high rev abuse to the engine. Over revving or running the engine at high revs for extended periods of time. If you just bought it, I would suspect that the seller was either racing the car or just flat didn't care if it blew or not. Could also be that the engine would die out on him as well and the only way he kept it running was to rev it high.

Either way, you have issues. I wouldn't worry so much about starting the car as I would be trying to fix the engine before it is blown completely.

Reading the problems, I would check to see if in fact the engine might be siezed. take out the starter and take it to Autozone or O'Rielly's ( I prefer O'Rielly's) and have them check the starter. They do it for free and their machine tests the starter under load and free spin.

Once you have that done, go from there.

These people here know their business and are always willing to help.

I definitely agree with Sneaky B about getting the starter checked, then even before turning the key, I would very slowly hand crank the engine to see if its seized...

Good Luck
