Let's hear about it! How many miles on your A6?

A4 Turbo?
Hi Shannon,
Thanks for taking part, but surely we have to "compare apples with apples".
An A4 Turbo, is a 4-cylinder engine and cannot be fairly compared with a much older 6-cylinder.
Nonetheless, happy motoring!!

Sold -by a satisfied owner
I sold my A6 this Spring -or, was it summer? It had reached 173K+ and was running great, especially since replacing the temp sensor, thermostat, and gasket last Fall (following a week of occasional not-starting problems). I sold it to an acquaintance once I found its replacement, a 2004 2.7 Allroad with about 110K LESS miles . The only other cars I considered seriously were the 2017 Outback and Forester. Eventually, as I kept balking/stalling at parting with the A6, I decided/acknowledged that nothing drove like an Audi for me and then shopped exclusively for used 6-cylinder ones (A5s, A6s, and Allroads). At the end, I had narrowed it to A6 Avants and Allroads only. Will continue to recommend 3.0 A6s.

Just bought a 2000 2.8L. 160k miles and had a check engine light so it could not pass emissions, so the owner decided to buy a new car since shop repairs are so much. The code was vacuum leak. I could hear a vacuum leak on the back top of the engine before I even checked the code. The crank breather hose that splits off 4 ways was cracked on the bottom. It was a PITA to get a new one on. Replaced the valve cover gaskets because they were leaking and spark plugs and oil for kicks. Running great now with no codes. I bought a timing belt and water pump combo and will do it soon because who knows the last time it was done... or ever
I have been trying to find a good guide for timing belt replacement. But it seems it is just posts of "use crank locking bar and locking pin" otherwise you are f'ed. No real good guides. Any help would be appreciated

Hi there,
VW Passat uses the same engine, so check those forums for advice, pictures and/or video clips, as well.
I ordered a CD with a Workshop Manual, for these cars, from the UK, some years back. It covers many models! Although I found navigation in the programme rather testing, I have found it to be quite an invaluable tool.
In South Africa there are very few of these vehicles and having work done by the Agents, are both very costly and also of inferior quality, so for me it's a no-no!
Found the car (A6 Avant of the same year as yours) generally a very nice car, except for problamatic electronics and inferior quality plastic moldings.
Wish you well in sorting your car and pleasant miles! (Mine has now done about 285K kilometers)
