Default New to Site! Have a few Questions.

Hi guys,

I just got a 1997 A4 1.8T Quattro and was wondering which aftermarket products are compatible with what the Audi dealer uses for the following:

1. Power Steering hydraulic fluid

2. Brake fluid

Also which petroleum companies are the best bet for good quality fuel (I heard that since somecompanies have their own distillation plants, they tend to supply a standard grade of fuel whereas smaller companies that purchase from the open market look for the best price and hence the fuel quality may vary).

Thanks

Probably just use the OEM fluid, its most likely some obscure German company, you can get it through your dealer.

Power Steering hydraulic fluid.

Because of the high cost of this oil from OEM suppliers, I researched this 3 years ago when my '85 5000 was using the stuff regularly. I found that standard medical (laxative) type clear mineral oil is completely safe to use. I used it for a year and finally fixed the seeping hose then went back to original $25.00/ liter oil. Never had any problem for the following 2 years then sold it. I now have a '90 200 Turbo and used the same oil in the power steering reservoir last year and finally replaced a $200+ hose to cure the leak. Bought mineral oil at the Walgreen Drug Co. for about $6.00/liter. This approach is for units that are "using" oil and you should revert to standard OEM oil after repair. Suspect that OEM oil has an anti corrosive additive thus the color.

This is for the power steering reservoir and not for the master cylinder or any other use.
