Default My tach is incorrect or at least I hope it is!!!

I just bought a 1996 Audi A4 2.8 v6 12v auto. I love the car, but I'm not sure about my tach. I think it is reading to high. When I floor the car the needle goes past where the 8K RPM mark would be if it had one. Then it stays their and the car still pulls for a short time, then shifts to another gear and does the same thing. The car seems to be running and shifting the way it should, but the tach just can't be right. The car redlines aroud 6250 RPM's so I can't think it would actually have power at 8K if it could even reach those kind of RPM's. My car in drive at 40mph is taching 2k, 60mph is 3k, 80mph is 4k, and 100mph is 5k rpm's. Does this sound right? Could some of you guys and girls tell me what you cars are taching at certain speeds in certain gears? If so maybe I could figure out what my RPM's actually are. Thanks for any help!

P.S. I already posted this same question in the new members welcome section. I'm just trying to get the question out to anyone who can help. Thanks again

I'm sure the trans is not slipping. It better no be, because it was just put in 3 weeks ago. I think something was just hooked up wrong or a sensor is bad.
