Default Are 1996 and 1997 the better years?

I have heard my many dealers that the 1996 and the 1997 Audi A4 2.8L Quattro is the better car than any year after that. The dealers said the more recent years give more problems, so i was wondering if this true.
Thanks

I got a 2001, have had no problems besides replacing the timing belt. Good car.

as far as the 2.8 goes, NO. 98 and up are much better and a newer car in general is going to be better.

the 12v engine isnt as complicated on the 96 and 97, but they have 18 less horsepower and are older, i have one and have never had a problem and heard they tend to be more reliable though, if you treat any of them right they will treat you right

12v = less maintenance and more reliable. However is it not a better car by any means unless reliability is all you consider.
