View Full Version : Head Rest Blocks View

Have been enjoying my A8L for about a month now -- pretty happy overall, but VERY upset that when I look into my rear view mirror, the right rear headrest blocks virtually the entire view of the lane to my right! In other words, there's a huge blind spot for oncoming traffic. Yes, I can use the side-view mirror, but it's clearly not the same. And after having been a driver for more than 30 years, it's not easy to get used to this. No other luxury sedan I've had has this problem, or anything close. My salesman says there's nothing that can be done.

Any thoughts? (I find it puzzling that a car that claims to be "the most intelligently designed car in the world" has such a MAJOR safety flaw.)

According to my salesman, it cannot be removed. Anyone know differently?

OK I just look at tyhe A we have in the showroom and it has a button on the side to make it go up and down but the seat needs to fold down and I can't find out how it does that but I could see it being possible anything is possible get the car in the shop get the techs to actually remove the rear seat back part and when the seat is out the headrest should be able to slide out this is if the seat doesn't fold down but I could't see anything on how the rear seat folds down let me know how this works out for you its a beutiful vehicle I love them

how tall are you?

I'm normal height -- 5' 10", and seat height adjustments make no difference -- that's why I can't understand why this is not a problem for everyone!

I'll try to get the service department to remove the head rest (not a good solution for the passenger who sits there!) and I'll let you know what happens.

The new 04 and up a8 cars come in three diffrent L modles. One with a moonroof, one with a fold down rear seat and moonroof, then one with nether. If you have the one with fold down rear seats then you can take the head rest off, but if you do not then you haft to take the back seat out, then remove the head rest. :D

Wanted to remove the rear headrests too. searched Bentley's online service manual and found that they CAN come out, but only by removeing the lower seat cushion, then some air bag wires, then more bolts...etc. They will not ever just pull off.

Often certain headrests will require a pin to be inserted into the headrest post for the headrest to be removed. Otherwise it will only adjust up and down. I think it was a safety issue. I do know that other luxury sedans allow you to electronically fold down the headrests.... too bad Audi didn't do this.

Has anybody thought of suggesting he push the button on the dash that lowers the rear headrests? Raise the drivers seat so he looks over the rear headrest (if he's rilly that short)? With my rear headrests raised the create the illusion that there is a car sneaking up on my blindside when I glance in the rearview. With them lowered, I have no such problems. They do not block my view in any way, shape, or form. But, I am 5'-11"...

As far as I know the 05s do not have this feature. It may be available in another package for the A8, but I have not seen it.

K, do me a fave, check 2 C if U hav a button, a few over from the right-most acessories button. It'll have a pictograph of a seat on it. If it's there, push and hold it. If your rear headrest IS raised, that will lower it.

No seat pictograph. I've got a parktronic button, then the electronic shade, ESP, Hazards, cup holder..... No rear seat headrest button. Looked at them earlier today and it does not seem to have any other movement than sliding up and down the two metal shafts. I think MB's actually come forward towards the inside of the cabin to free up the view in the rear. This would be the only way an electronic headrest lower-er would be worthwhile in the A8 as the rear headrest are enormous! Our A8 does not have this feature...

Try raising your seat up, perhaps.
