99.5 Audi A4 timing belt
I have 99.5 Audi A4 with 98K miles. I have been using this mecahnic who has done the following so far
All prices including labor
At the dealer
Coolant hose replaced: $300
Valve cover gasket replaced: $280
At the local Audi mechanic
Outer axle boot replaced: $172
Windshield Washer tank replaced: $112
Tie rod ends replaced on both sides: $250
What do you think these are good prices ? He says I need to replace timing belt. He has offered to
do it for $800 including folowing parts and labor
Belts, Cam seals, Roller, Belt Roller, Timing belt, water pump
My question is: Is this a good price and should I go for timing belt change ? I read something about tensioners.
Does the above list of parts include tensioner? If not how much extra I have to spend to get tensioners
Thanks a lot for your help

If the timing belt hasn't been changed yet and you have 98K on it, You need to change it asap! You are supposed to change the TB on these at like 60k.
However, that price seems a bit steep to me. A friend of mine just got and older S4 (forgot the year), he got the the TB and waterpump changed for $500. And this is a very well known and experienced mechanic around my area, not just some schmuck. Do some calling around.

Well you got ripped off with the coolant hose and valve cover gasket, but the other stuff were decently priced. If you don't have the service history of the last TB change then I'd go ahead and change it ASAP. Its usually not the timing belt thats usually faulty, its the rollers that seize and snap the belt. You should ask the tech if it includes the tensioner, which it should.
holy crap you got HOSED at the dealership. i wish i could replace coolants hoses for 300 lol. as far as the timing belt job. 800 is decent but its possible to find better. 700 is good. also make sure it includes the tensioner, because thats the part that usually fails, not the timing belt itself. if he doesn't include the tensioner, def. dont let him do it.
