Rx-7 is your best bet of those. I don’t think they are worth the $$ they are selling for though.
Mr-2 is an awesome car, but also not worth what they sell for.
Supra, 300zx… I think they both feel horrible in turns, fat and slow turning.
Datsun Z car, or Miata. Both have a great variety of possible swaps, plenty of other aftermarket, and can look great with a little aftermarket help. Plus they are both fairly light cars.

supra and 300zx slow in turns? well speaking from experience thats not true. The twin turbo models of course...plus the 300zx has all wheel steering....and some of the best brakes.

Alright the rx7 was one of my favorites i will look at the miata and z car but whatever car i get would most likely be gutted so i dont know if that would make a difference in the supras and 300zxs handeling but what about an engine swap for the mg midget it is a 69 it weighs like 1500 pounds and has 65hp so i bet 200hp would make it quick as hell

I didn't mean they are bad handling cars. I think they feel fat and slow turning, Not nimble cars at all. They take turns ok, but aren't a "fun" car in the twisties. They are highway queens.

The MG is a cool car.

Big engines in little cars is what life is all about.

Look into swaps on an MG board, I don't have a clue what they do to them, but a porsche 944T would make a 1500 lb car a vette eater and still be a fairly light 4 cylinder.

I would go with the Datsun Z or the 300zx but both of those I know a bit about so I may be one sided.

I owned a '91 MR2 turbo that I did quite a bit of work to. I will make some comments about this car only as I know the most about it. Fun car, but a little dated as well. Anti-lock brakes on these things are horrible, the worst thatI have ever experience. They slowly lock, release, lock, release, etc. causing the car to vibrate harshly and seem to take longer to stop than if you just went into a skid. The boards usually have people asking what the hell just happened and what is wrong with their car when they first experience it. Also, depending on your location, expect ~$1000 timing belt changes as well due to the mid engine configuration. Handling is decent, but I would suggest some suspension upgrades at the beginning. To get to 250-300 rwhp is fairly easy with a $5000 investment, but to get to 500 rwhp expect to spend $30-50K. Still a fun car.

As far as other suggestion, 280zx or 240z with swap are very fun, although I would stayaway from a 1985-1990 300z (owned these as well). The MG you have is also a great car, just becareful of what you throw in there. I had one that someone crammed a LT1 into and while it took off fast had some serious handling issues.

PS The FD RX7 I had spent more time in the shopthan any car I have ever owned and I never really got to experience it before I sold it for a$500 loss ifI including all the repair work. If you get one of these, make sure you always check the oil and becareful of any mods already done to it. They have a tendency to blow apex seals which require an entire engine rebuild at the minimum.

What about a mid 90's M3? those straight 6's can really be made to pack a huge punch.
I"m getting my brother a turbo 944 Porsche we're going to turn into a project car for him.
