I think it is so that it does not scratch up the side of the console.

To prevent rattles when vehicle is in motion... I wish the "velcro" was on a couple of that inaccessible rattling parts.

hehe...it's not called a "velcro"

it's a "flocking" tape, can be used for many reason. In this application it's to prevent rattles and wear on adjacent parts.

Haha, I always wondered what that was for too! Then again, before now I have never owned a car that had this level of design and attention to detail. Those Germans sure do know how to build a car!

If it's cupholders you're interested in, I can show you a lovely mini van

---Or had a flat tire during winter....with bolts to holdwheels!!! + steel wheel hub that protrude in a magnesium wheel to hold it....and to help you out they leave you a weak tubular alluminium 1 foot long wrench...

---Or had to replace wiper bladeswho can't be lift off the window without a the "proper sequence" on the wiper control arm....INSIDE the car.

Yes, it's the little things that warm my heart... like how the parking brake cannot be extended without hitting the armrest. And how once the armrest is moved upward by the parking brake, it must be fully raised to allow it to be returned to it's original position. And the look that I get from the passenger as I'm performing this excercise. But then I drive for a bit and I forget...
