I just got this car and looked through the trunk and found two half empty bottles of fluid. One being Strauss and the other Unified? I never heard of either one of these but I am doubting they are the right kind. Havent really driven the car yet, still putting it back together, so I hope nothings been damaged.

 

most commonly used ps fluid for Audi is Pentosin CHF 7.1 mineral oil. It should be a clear-to-slightly green color.

 

Think it is ok to use BG PS fluid? It says that it replaces the G002000 fludi from Audi/VW

 

NOOO!!!! get it flushed ASAP. i just had this problem and my p/s pump went cause of it. $600 its now fixed but i still have to worry about what kind of seal damage it did. trust me if its the wrong fluid flush it, even though audi fluid is $21 a liter and you need 3 to flush it, trust me its better then having your pump go bad, 4 hrs labor and a $250 pump.

 

I dont know how long its been in there, but probably a while. While I have the front end apart, I guess Ill disconnect the hose from the cooler and try to get as much out as possible. I just ordered a liter of pentosin. Whats the wrong stuff do anyway? Ruin pump seals?

 

Yup, I need to do this too. The bodyshop changed the lines and I don't know which fluid they put in there.

 

I had been wondering about mixing CHF 7.1 and CHF 11S fluids. On the bottles it says not to but on Blauparts web site it says this:

There has been a good measure of controversy over this question. Here is what our own experience shows. Over the last decade we've had no compatibility problems mixing the CHF 7.1 non-synthetic mineral base fluid and the CHF 11S synthetic based Vw power steering fluid. No problems with our own vehicles and no problems with our customers vehicles. Our success in mixing the 2 Vw power steering fluids coincides with the Audi/Vw tech bulletin 48-89-T07 issued in November 1989. It states "The new [synthetic Pentosin 11S] and old power steering fluid [non-synthetic Pentosin 7.1] can be mixed if necessary ... the part number [remains] unchanged." So according to Audi/Vw, you can mix the 2 Vw power steering fluids. Even though the composition of the fluid changed (CHF 11S synthetic mineral oil vs CHF 7.1 non-synthetic mineral oil), Audi/Vw didn't even change the part number. Please Note: Never mix generic power steering fluid or other fluid with the CHF 7.1 or CHF 11S Vw hydraulic fluid (G002000). If you or someone else did, flush the Vw power steering fluid as described below.

 

FLush immediately, and hope you didnt ruin your pump or rack. I just replaced some hoses on my PS system and it wasnt fun!

 

I went through this when i got my car. I picked up my audi a4 leaking PS fluid and with an engine light all brightly lit on the dashboard for 3k$. New wheels and tires, removed the cat and put a test pipe on her, replaced some hoses and flushed the system and she was a cherry again.
The easiest way it to disconnect the return line from the rack to the RES and put in in a bucket. I plugged hole in the res and filled it up. I got my girlfriend to crank the car for 5 second intervals, while i made sure the res stayed full. do this until you see the green fluid pass through clearly. I got two big bottles to make sure I had enough.
