Default worried about my tranny, help!!

i've got a 98 B5 2.8 AT Quattro

my old tranny crapped out on me about 2 months ago. i started noticing the problem when, after starting the car, the engine would make a loud winding noise - like revving the engine to 5k+ rpms kinda noise. the tach, however, didn't move. i'd turn the car off and try restarting it and it would be ok. this noise progressivly got worse over a couple months i'd sayuntil i had to get it towed to my mechanic. the mechanic told me it could have been the tranny's flywheel making that high pitched winding noise. transmission was shot.

so i dropped in a new tranny. ordered it online, had it shipped and installed. the B5 it came from only had 60K mi on it. i've been noticing a small leak in my driveway and i've ruled out most fluids except for transmission fluid. this morning when i started the car up, i get the winding noise again and i'm worried that i just spent $2gs on either a bad tranny or bad service on the install.

has anyone experienced this sound? is there any way to check the transmission fluid levels? the hayne's manual index doesn't even have a transmission section listed!! any help or knowledge would be much appreciated.

ok i'm not a specialist on auto trannies but i've nvr heard of a fly wheel. as far as i kno, there's a torque converter and a valve wachamacallit. so how did you rule out other fluids? have you looked under the car, got a sample of the leaking fluid? there's a plug on the drivers side of the trany, it's like right below the shifter but under the car.

no fly wheel huh? interesting. i'm not sure what else would be causing that high-pitched rev noise, but it's definitely associted or inside the tranny. that noise was the tell tale sign of the deterioration of the original tranny. i'm not sure if the leak was the cause of the noise and that, in turn, was the cause of the tranny crapping out or what.

when i say leak , i mean a very very slow drip. no puddle forms. just leaves a spot. i haven't ruled out EVERY other fluid. but i've checked theradiator fluid, brake, power steering and oil and all levels are stable. is there no way to check the tans. fluid level? i'm just associating the leak with the noise i heard. when i started the car this morning, the noise would not stop unitl i turned the car off and turned it back on. and then i had a flashback of my tranny crapping out and freaked out a little bit.

when it wasinstalled about3 weeks ago, my mechanic said he had replaced all seals and gaskets connecting the tranny to the engine. i'm not sure if i should take it back into him, or go to a trans. specialist and get a second opinion. i have a vw dealership right across teh street from my house and may go there just so they can plug it in and give me a diagnostic.

thanks for your response.
