Default 1999 A4 2.8 Tensioner Replacement (possible without front end off?)

Seems easily doable in this video but I've tried and failed.

Can anyone confirm that there is actually less room in this space on a 99 a4 compared to a 99 passat hence making this impossible or have I not tried hard enough?

Is there any other way or does the whole front end have to come off?
