Default 2003 a6 avant hatch not opening.

my rear hatch on my C5 avant won't open. and I have no idea how to get the interior panels off. It feels like there is something in the way of the locking mechanism itself. if I push the key button to open it, it's like it moves most of the way, stops and then slides back a bit. And I can certainly feel a resistance in the handle.
Anyone have an idea what it might be and perhaps point me in the right direction how to get the interior panels off. I have the built in shades if that changes anything.

Thank you

Did you try to open from the inside? Maybe the child lock on the inside somehow got stuck? You need to open the hatch to remove the interior panel.

I saw no latch on the inside, where would that be? But I opened a small panel and saw a part of the lock assembly. I tried moving it but it only went far enough to trigger the interior lights but after that is just stopped

Right in the middle of the hatch. See item #1 on the following diagram.

I don't have any handle on the inside. Only the shades and cover for the security/reflective triangle. and under the triangle there is nothing. But I can see parts of the latch mechanism through holes where the triangle was.

I swear, Audi's are more complex than the 757's I work on every day...

Odd... Are you from somewhere other than the US?

The car was imported to Iceland from Canada as far as I know.

I think the rear access may have been a US federal requirement for allowing trapped person to get out of the trunk. Us crazy Americans...

Sorry buddy, I am out of ideas.
