Default 2002 AWD TT 6 Speed - No Gear Engagement

So, the car was driving fine one day and nothing the next.

Both shift and selector cables are observed not to move whenever the shift ****/clutch is engaged into gear.

There is zero engagement at the shift **** as i can freely move it around to pocket.

To try and troubleshoot this problem, I have since removed the ****, and rubber cover to unveil the raw guts of the shifter mechanism heading into the transmission.

However, I cannot go any further because i cannot remove the console compartment that surrounds this selector. I just cannot remove it and it is bugging me.

How do you remove this compartment cover?

PS - I observed a broken plastic back tab inside this area as well and have removed it - any idea if this broken tab could be related to my woes?
